The 4 sides of events

Cultural events (shows, expositions, etc.) need four forces at play. It will be a total failure if one of these components is missing, period. It’s frequent to have someone or some organization doing more than one task, but you will always have those fours at any of these event. A great way to summarize a project, may it be for planning or selling the idea to someone, is to explain briefly the four sides of it. Here’s the list with some examples.

They are not always four separate entities, but they are always there.

  • Place : Where is it happening? Who’s the host? Is there a need for equipment?
    • The show takes place at Pub X, we’re set for 7h00 PM this Saturday, equipment is already in place.
    • The exposition will be at the museum next week, we will need a sound system.
    • A school is using its own facilities to host a dancing night.
  • Promotion : Who’s organizing? Who’s connecting the dots?
    • 2BOUQ is taking care of everything.
    • Our student association needs to raise funds, they are setting an event.
    • A local bar owner wants to fill an empty night.
  • Public : Who’s coming?
    • This show will attract fans of indie music.
    • This event needs to bring rich folks to buy arts at an auction.
    • Fans of an artist want to bring him to the city to give an exclusive concert.
  • Performance : What are you going to show? Who’s doing it? How?
    • Omnikron and Jael Bird are doing the show.
    • Students from a local college are doing a showcase of their final year projects.
    • A local singer is setting its own shows.

It’s far from being a complete plan or a proof of success, but it’s a great starting point. Sooner or later you will need to answer those questions, do it as fast as you can in your planning.
